I'm looking to add one more small fish to my tank, and I have my heart set on something colorful like a court jester goby. I have a few questions, though.
- Are they very active? I love my mandarin but she isn't out often during the day, and my clown is in his anemone 80% of the time so I only really see my coral beauty often. I need another active fish.
- Are they known jumpers? My tank has a canopy, but the back is open. There's about 4 inches from the surface of the water to the open part of the back. I've stayed away from firefish because I'm paranoid about one jumping ship.
- Do they tend to have problems eating in captivity?
I LOVE the look of them, but I've never seen one at my favorite LFS and I've only seen maybe one at another store that isn't local but is huge (That Fish Place in Lancaster, PA). [Granted I only go there a few times a year, but still.] I can't find a lot of research on these guys and I'm hoping that maybe someone on here has kept one/currently has one and ccan give me some info. Thanks in advance! :)

They need an established large tank with a working live sandbed. They are sandsifters and I have never witnessed them take prepared foods.

i had one for about a year.
it ate flake food, but when i had a tank problem he was an unfortunate victim.

They aren't listed on this site but on another site I go to, it says they need a minimum 10-gallon tank. I have a 29-gallon with a 10-gallon sump/fuge. I have plenty of copepods and everything and I've had live sand for about two years. Do you think it would be a suitable habitat for one?

Rainsford goby (aka court jester goby) will be fine. They are fairly hardy fish best kept with peacful fish. Mine are our out about 70% of the time. They will eat cyclop-eeze and hair algae.They are always picking at the rock and crushed coral. Hope this helps.

As I said, they will not take prepared food. An awesome fish, you are right they are out front and center. Another awesome fish just like them, but a different pattern/color, is the hector's goby.
copepods do not necessarily come in with everyone's tank. Some people think they have them, but they are another crustascean..like amphipods. One way to insure their population, is to have a working refugium, and add live copepods periodically. I do so every three months at least.

ive heard they are hard to get to start eating. I not sure tho ive never had one, i really want one tho

Promisetbg I think you you need to to do a little more research they have been breed in captivity and will except some prepared foods.

I have copepods, amphipods, and all kinds of pods. I know they don't come in everyone's tank but I've had live rock in this tank since 2003, live sand since 2004 and a fuge since 2005. :)
I've seen hector's gobies and I almost bought one once, but I wanna hold out for the more colorful court jester.

I don't know where Greenfield is, but I go to The Pet Zone in Pittston. It's the best LFS ever. If you're close to Bloomsburg, Miller's Reef is great as well. A few times a year I make a trip out to Lancaster with a friend of mine to go to That Fish Place, too. :)
