I just set up my BakPak and I have it fully open and I am still adjusting the collection cup. I have a 55g fo ls no lr. 2 false percs 3 assorted damsels, cleaner shrimp 6 hermits 2 giant snails. Fluval 304 for filtration. My question is when should I see crud in the cup if any and how long do you run the skimmer(all the time???) Is it always this loud....well at least the loudest thing I have on the tank or in the tank??I am still skeptical whether I need a skimmer and I'm still waiting for proof....any opinions??Thanks:rolleyes:

Make sure that the bottom of the collection cup sits right at the line of bubbles in the skimmer and you can adjust it up and down depending on how it works for you.
Leave it for a few days and you'll begin to see crud collected. It needs to get a buildup on the plastic to work properly IMO. Mine was the same way but now I get a bunch of crud. It will help remove fish waste adn other stuff so it's good to have even without LR. Once it starts collecting stuff you'll see why you want it.
It will stay pretty loud but I have had mine on for two months now and I can't tell it's on anymore. I just tune it out I guess. Maybe if it bugs you just run it while you are at work or school or whatever you do during the day and turn it off when you get home. Unless you have a really high bio-load skimming half the day should be sufficient.

Thanks for the replies. Another thing, I bought the bubble trap and I can't figure the #@!$ing thing out. The instructions from CPR SUCK! Can anyone explain it in normal terms how to install it over the outlet? Also, I have it fully open, and it releases a little bit of microbubbles, will this harm the fish or my other inhabitants...I don't care what it looks like w/bubbles?? Why wouldn't I need the skimmer if I don't have LR?? Is this true? If so, I'd rather not have one, but only if I don't need one. Thanks:eek:

You never really "need" one it's just better to have one and in my opinion since you already have it I'd leave it on even if you don't get any crud to speak of. It will increase your tank's ability to support bio-load (this doesn't mean that you can just fill it to the top with fish though;) ) and removes waste that would otherwise remain in your tank however little the amount. At least you should wait until it breaks and and see what you get before you decide. That's what convinced me. I didn't want to leave that stuff in my tank. HTH

I had the same problem with installing the bubble trap. I ended up emailing cpr and they helped me that way. The sponge goes in the bottom of the bubble trap and stays at the bottom. The whole bubble trap slides straight up over the outlet tube so the sponge is on the bottom. The side of the bubble trap that is completely open is the bottom...the side that has just the center opened up is the part that slides over the outlet tube. Also make sure wherever you put it you can easily get it back off because you have to clean the sponge constantly. I made the mistake of hiding it with live rock...not a good idea.

I had bubbles coming out of my skimmer into the tank for a few days, they eventually stopped, I don't use the bubble trap.
