Crab ID please....

To collect from fla waters, you must have a saltwater fishing lic and there are limits to what you can collect and how much. there are protected creatures that should never be collected.

Anyways, the guy was just asking for a crab id, not anything else other than that.
And how do you not know if the fish you buy from online or from a lfs isn't illegally taken from the ocean?

Yeah that looks like a stone crab.
Collecting stuff from the ocean is perfectly safe and legal. Most of the critters there are healthier than the average tank... Just by the sheer fact that's their natural habitat. So I wouldn't worry too much about disease unless it's obvious. Natural selection takes care of sick fish in the ocean. Honestly, my healthiest fish/inverts are the ones I caught as they aren't shipped half way across the world from Sri-Lanka or Thailand.
If your brother is serious about collecting his own critters I would suggest picking up some fish/invert identification books. The Paul Human ones are great. Then make sure to follow the FWC rules for collecting Ornamental Aquarium Species .
BTW, I don't think it's legal to keep stone crabs, just their claws, and only when their claws are 2 3/4 inches.

found one of those as a hitchhiker once. And it will kill fish and other inverts so i would keep a close eye on it.

Yeah it turns out its not legal to keep them.. But he is collecting everything for his tank from off the coast. He is making it more like his local enviorment.. Kind of like an experiment for both of us to watch... The Laws that were put in place were to stop people from harvesting them and making a profit without the goverment getting there piece and to control their numbers.. But thats another topic I don't want to get into.. What I can't stand is when I ask one question and get answers to other questions I can care less about.. I didn't ask that, if I cared, I would have asked for everyone's advice on if thing it's "wrong"...
I can care less if you think it's wrong to take something from the sea... Cause the truth is, if your LFS sold them.... you would buy them..
So please don't criticize me or my brother on what "we" decide to put in our tanks..

If I had the means and way to keep it... yes... people do.. And we are also talking about an invert... not an endangered animal..

How do you know this crab is not an endangered animal? You don’t even know what it is. That’s why you posted your question, right?
By posting their ideas and opinions about the good vs bad points of private collecting, these guys are making others aware of it. You may see it as attacking you and your brother, but I think others see it as a learning opportunity for everyone, not just you.
This forum is great because it lets people state their opinions. If they say something that you don’t like or agree with, then move on and ignore them. If you don’t want the bad with the good, then don’t post at all.
