Having always seen decorator crabs in full clothing. I spotted these two red decorator crabs with out clothes and thought it would be nice to see them start to attach polyps to their shells. Pictures are acclimating first introduced and the next day. These guys work fast

Yes they have a shell they are called decorator crabs because they attack clippings of sponges, polyps and macro algae to their carapace. They look like a mobile frag when they get fully covered. The coral does not seem to mind getting clipped and reattached to them

Hey Joe.
What are the orange and yellow frags that are on the crab in the 3rd pic??
Great pics. IDK how you guys get them so crystal clear.
Is there a reason for why they do this?? Is it a means of camouflage, or another reason?

Woody I believe they do this as camouflage. He or she has taken polyps from the coral it was placed near so I believe you can engineer any decorations you like. I was thinking of taking the crab out and scraping off the polyps and placing the crab near some blue zoos but I am going to get two more and see if I can come up with some interesting color on them.
The coral you asked about is a Ricordea
