Crazy Crab!

So I had this hermit crab that took over the biggest shell in my tank. He could barely carry it up a rock, but eventually he grew into it. It became my favorite hermit crab and my son named it Sam. A couple of weeks ago, it went missing. I could not find the shell or anything. Today we found the answer.
It seems that this crab climbed out of the water and dropped to the floor. It then crawled 20-30 feet across the carpet and under the couch where it died.

I have heard of fish jumping, but Crabs?

do you have a dog or cat that could have been playing with it when it ended up on the floor and brought it over and lost it under the couch? I know my dog loses his toys under the couch all the time so it was just a guess.
