crazy noises at night?

So this morning, all lights are off, I walked out to the living room where the reef tank is and I heard a low, methodical, croaking sound, like a frog. I walked up to the tank and it stopped. I took a few steps back and it started again. I brought out my flashlight and looked around the tank, nothing was unusual. What could possibly be making that sound? I have a yellow tang, a black sailfin blenny and a coral banded shrimp for livestock.
Any insights???

Did you catch that show last year on NBC called “Surface”? It could be one of those things. You should kill it before it gets too big. I mean, these things get really big! :scared:

That was my favorite new show last season! I was so upset when they cancelled it...

Surface was canxed....boo! If you think it is a critter are you using a red light to check the tank? The animals usually don't react to it. Just encase it's a reclusive Nibbler.

most likely a mantis shrimp that hitchicked in your live rock....
i have one in my 180g tank ive never seen him but i hear the cracking at night....
they have very powerful front arms that they use to crack the shells of hermits and snails to eat them....

yeah we just figured out last night that its definitely mechanical and coming from the overflow area. Thanks for confirming our idea!
I was worried it was a mantis shrimp but I looked it up and it wasn't a cracking sound it was croaking like a frog.
Thanks everyone!

Reef monster for sure!! I had one come out of my tank once. 12 Gauge solved that problem. SLugs work best, the buck shot takes to many shots to bring them down.
