BTW a refuge is the filtration system.
The critters in the live rock, and macro's are indeed "natural filters"...but so are the little pineapple sponges, fan worms and bivales....but that is not the purpose of a refugium...live rock (with all the cool little critters) and macro's can stay in the display tank, so a refugium is not considered a "filter". The fish will eat your macro's and they will deplete the pod population, so we put them on a refugium to keep them safe from the goblins...You put live rock and macro in a fuge. Unless I misread all my research, that makes it a natural filtration system.
The sump area is for mechanical filtration. Skimmer, reactors, return pump, and so on.
But, maybe Sprung, Delbeek and Moe are all wrong.
