Crushed coral or sand?

I was initial planning on getting sand...but I found a guy who's selling 50lbs of crushed coral substrate for $50.
I wondered if it would work good on a reef system. Im hoping for bottom feeders that will sift through the bottom, so should I get sand or crushed coral?
its 6months old...but has been sitting out dry for weeks, and will sit in my garage for weeks still to come, so I figure anything will be dead anyways.....I can always put it in the oven or microwave too if that's a way to kill bacteria.

i would go sand. unless you feel like cleaning it once a week. i have to clean my CC at least once a week or it looks really bad. i am in the process of changing it out . so if it were me i would by the sand and skip the CC

I started out years ago w/CC, then switched to sand for my reef tank. It looks better, I think it's better for your bottom dwelling corals (brains, long tentacle plate corals) and itis easier maintenance. IMHO, saqnd is the way to go 100%. Better to start out this way than to change out your substrates in an established tank-that is a nasty messy job you don't ever want to have to do! I've been there, it sucks.

I wouldn't even mess with CC...And go with sand , hands down

For 50 dollares u can get a good amount of Dry Aragonite.. go with the finer grain-size u can find..
Youll have a killer sandbed eventually, all u need is a few lbs of lr to seed it with infauna.

I agree-you can get this ( Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand ) -- 34 bucks for 40 lbs. Then seed it with a few lbs of real live sand like they sell here.
This is what I am using
