Crushed coral vs. LS

im not feeling like going scientific..I will say that CC must be vacumed regularly to reduce nitrate accumulation..
CC is fine for a fish only tank.
Sand has much more to offer..thus making it more efficient and desirable for reefs due to the infauna biodiversity it hosts..Not to mention that LS is superior in buffering capacity, which helps your tank to be more stable..

a copy of one of my old posts hope it helps
What a lot of people do not factor in is the fact is if you look at CC as purely a media for bio filtration it is much better then sand. If you look at a grain of sand under a microscope you will see the rater smooth surface. Now look at a piece of CC its multifaceted more overall area for nitrification bacteria to colonize on. Sand tends to pack closer together forming a tighter upper layer and inhibiting water transfer to the inner levels of sand where anaerobic bacteria will colonize. Now granted this packing is medicated by sand sifting inhabitants but sand does leave you with many death spots. Now the down side of CC is what in fact makes it superior to sand the multifaceted face allows for space between each piece and this space is where detritus can accumulate and impact the surface of the bed. Ease of maintenance go with sand with the help of a large sand sifting crew want a better media for nitrification and are willing to do the maintains go with CC
I will admit astatically I like sand. Personally I have CC
BTW first BIG how are you my friend and second changed my old avatar because I was reminded that there are children on the forums and a pic of myself might be too much and please ask as many questions are you need to further your education

thanks that was put into perfect words i understand 100% i do have crushed coral in my tank at the moment and i do maintain it just not as much as im suppose to. being new i believe i will have hundreds more questions to ask and since you seem very wise dont be suprised if you get a PM or two from me
i dont get what your saying about your avatar as i have not seen the one your discussing but i do like the new one. how often to you take a vac to your CC?

I vacuum my CC with every water change that does not mean the whole area just a section at a time the less disruption to your substrate the better
just looked at your profile with a small tank such as yours you should have no trouble maint your CC BUT Small tanks mean easier bio filter disruption go slow with the substraight cleaning once it is clean attack the areas of high detritus frequently so you do not have much disruption
