A lot of people that go with CC decide to change later and that in addition to being a pita, can be disastrous.
Which is why you should do our homework and stick with your decision

What a lot of people do not factor in is the fact is if you look at CC as purely a media for bio filtration it is much better then sand. If you look at a grain of sand under a microscope you will see the rater smooth surface. Now look at a piece of CC its multifaceted more overall area for nitrification bacteria to colonize on. Sand tends to pack closer together forming a tighter upper layer and inhibiting water transfer to the inner levels of sand where anaerobic bacteria will colonize. Now granted this packing is medicated by sand sifting inhabitants but sand does leave you with many death spots. Now the down side of CC is what in fact makes it superior to sand the multifaceted face allows for space between each piece and this space is where detritus can accumulate and impact the surface of the bed. Ease of maintenance go with sand with the help of a large sand sifting crew want a better media for nitrification and are willing to do the maintains go with CC
I will admit astatically I like sand. Personally I have CC
BTW first BIG how are you my friend and second changed my old avatar because I was reminded that there are children on the forums and a pic of myself might be too much

i started my tank with cc. and it looks like crap. after my deep sand bed refugium is up and running i plan on doing the pain staking task of removing all the cc to put in all sand.

while doing water changes you use one of these (gravel vac)and jab it into the crush coral, the dirt and debri is sucked up but the crush coral it too heavy so it rolls around in the tube and falls back into the tank

here's when i had crushed coral. I thought it looked fine but I agree sand looks better (clean sand anyway).

do you need to buy one of those or can you make one? how does it work?
you buy em, any pet store will have one (gravel vac). Its just a siphon tube with an attachment. I dont think I can explain it any better than above. I would probably go with sand unless you like the look of crush coral better. sand you dont mess with at all.

Yes but you also can buy a battery operated vacuum that runs the water through a mesh filter taking out detritus without tanking any water out of the tank

Ok. You know how sand gets compacted. Well while cleaning your tank can you stir up the sand or is that a bad thing to do?

go with the sand/agrogate. i have CC and i set up my new nanos with sand and agrogate, and they look so much nicer. i did add some of my CC into the mix but that is all i will use it for.

I would recommend vacuuming a section at a time so you don’t upset your bio filter balance
