it can trap algea and fish poop, and eventually lead to nitrate problems, theres a few more reasons but i cant remeber at the moment, if you clean it well and often it should be ok, its just takes a lot more time than live sand

CC tends to absorb the calcium from the water. I do not advocate crushed coral at all. It is a nitrate trap. People used to recomend it long ago, as they used to recomend the undergravel filter before much was known about biological filtration.

Also the algea turning it green/brown is nasty to look at compared to white sand. Not recommended much anymore like underground filters are a no-no now too.

Yeah, used to it was thought ot be great. Though now people realize that it can mess with the calcium & possibly cause nitrate problems. However though I feel like it is a little blown out of proportion. I wouldn't say to get it, but then again if you had it in a tank that is doing fine & has been doing fine. Why go through the trouble unless it is surely causing a problem. Because switching substrates is a pain. If you test your water every now & then you would be able to catch problems before they turned huge & then go from there. Moral of the story don't use it, but don't freak untill you start to see a problem if you have it. Sand does look a lot better though too.

and how terrible it is is grossly over exaggerated. I dont have any calcium or nitrate issues. If you pack on 3" worth it can be troublesome so I hear. IF you use it as tank decor substrate (enough to comfortably cover the bottom surface)you should have zero issues with crush coral and water quality. only thing you need to do different is vacuum it during water changes which is hardly any harder than normal siphoning. 2yrs now and I'm still waiting for the "issues" to arise.
