Does anyone know what type of store i should go to in order to find Crushed Oyster Shells In Milwaukee Wisconsin? Im going to do some experiments on Bob's methods. So dont worry im not taking his advice, just trying to fill Kip's shoes by proving Bob wrong.

I'm not sure about Milwaukee, but I've found them here at local farm feed stores. They sell them in big bags for chicken feed supplement. (I used it once in an attempt to make base rock, but didn't like how it turned out). I know you are close to farm country...my dad's family is from Watertown. HTH.

i wouldn't spend too much time/energy/money worrying with it.. even if you do manage to prove him wrong, he will just explain it away with some jibber jabber that doesnt make any sense to anyone except him.. :nope:
if you do decide to go through with it, please please please i can't stress this enough please rinse the oyster shells very very very thouroughly to remove any possible dust on the shells before you put them in your system.
i don't want the experiment to show dissolving oyster shells when in reality it was just calcium containing dust on the shells that causes the numbers to go up.

Just a side comment...
Calcium carbonate dust will register on a Calcium test but is totally useless to reef aquariums. Quite the opposite, the dust will pull useable Calcium and ALK from the water and make it unavailable to Corals. The dust will also pull a small amount of Magnesium but that won't be significant unless you add the dust on a regular basis.
Good Luck with the experiment.

bob, seems like you would want it done my way because if you rinse them of all the dust first and THEN the calcium levels increase it would give you more of an argument that shells are actually being dissolved in your system.

lol To rinse or not to rinse, that is the question........
I'll listen to Bang
Ok so bob your trying to tell me that you have the oyster shells in a filter (like a Whisper?) and the shells are "dissolving"?

2 choises, listen to Bob or listen to Bang.
Don't rinse them and you will detect calcium, but it will mean nothing.
Rinse them and you may prove Bob right or wrong. Hmmmm....

In the other thread he says:rolleyes: he has them in a tank about 4" deep. Not sure what size tank. The water rolls around them.
The water does flow through about 4-6" of shells. the crossection of the oyster shells is ~10"x3".
