I hate to sound rude but, neither. I had a ss220 on my 180 til recently, it is not enuf for a 180 IMO. I sold it and got a reef devil deluxe.
If I were buying one today, i would look at the mrc -mr2
or the Aqua euro recirculating 265. Or of course the etss skimmers, depending on the bioload of the 180, a reef devil would work or go up to the evolution 500.
The main drawback for the mrc's and the etss's is that they are require big pumps to operate. I personally dont worry about the electric usage as long as I can get something that works well.
The mrc's and etss's are awesome skimmers and are in another league form the coralife, and with the recent price raise on the coralife's they are really not much more money, considering it is probably the 1 most important piece that you buy.
Just my .02

thanks joncat.......well the 180 will be sumpless, so i am looking at my hob skimmer options.....last night the power went out again(as it does every major storm here in south tx) maybe 5 times a year.....so i ask you as a fellow member of swf.com.........what is your advice 180 hobskimmer(s) .....i plan to have lowlow stock...three tangs, two clarkiis and maybe a scribbled rabbitfish......so i'm thinking a 125g bioload....just getting a real good deal on a 180gallon....thanks

I am not very up to date on HOB skimmers, sorry.
Why is it that you are not using a sump?? I think it is almost as important as a skimmer to have an area to grow some macro algae and it is nice to have a place to put all the equipment.

i have yet to meet someone that fully explains an easy way to put a sump together..(especially what items are needed and what is not)....besides, i've heard too many horror stories about sumps spilling out onto the floor.....especially down here in laredo where the power goes out with every major thunderstorm....my original dream tank is a 210, but have yet to have someone tell me exactly what i need...how many pumps.....maybe thinking of calling someone from san antonio tx to come down to laredo to set a sump up for me.....don't reallly have room for a fish room and we all know that stand space is very limited.......will sumpless work or should i just honestly give up the idea of oneday having my 210 sumpless....thanks joncat

sumps are not that hard...I assume that your tank is not drilled. If not all you need is an overflow box and some minor plumbing work that is easy to do. If you set it up right, there is almost no chance for it to overflow onto floor, if their was people wouldnt do it.
I am by no means an expert, but I could just about gaurantee, that I could help you set it up just fine. Especially with the help of others on here.

the life reef overflows are expensive, but they work great and you dont want to skimp on the overflow drain

sounds like your planing on setting up a new tank, if so i would just get it drilled its like 30 bucks a hole compared to 80 bucks for a overflow box which you might need two.

-I have a aga 210 and I would recommend getting it w/built in overflows, a tank this size will move lots of water and it will be making lots of noise.
just as an example my wife always complained about my 55 gallon cause it wasnt drilled, my 210 is alot quieter than even the 55 gallon was.
-Stay away from the odyssea lights, they are junk, yes i had one and couldnt give it away. (if you have the money get halides, its just a matter of time before you will want corals)
-my return pump is a 2400 gph and use hydor coralia stream pumps for added flow.
-30 gallon tank will be fine for now but will probably want a bigger sump later on for a fuge, etc. I have a 40 long.
-i run 3 250w heaters in winter and 2 250w heaters in summer.
-if you have the cash drop it on a good skimmer, something along the lines of a etss, das, etc.
I think thats it for now
