These guys do not have true "bones" but they have a support "rod" if you will. In squid it is quite flexible and clear - like plastic- and called a "pen." But in cuttlefish it is more calcified and aids in support and bouyancy. When the animal dies, the cuttlebone can be removed...and often given to birds. :)

Well Thank you everyone. I am undecided what I will do just yet. But for sure I will be getting all the information that I can and then decide. I have been reading articles on people who breed the cuttle fish and gathering all the information that I can. So far the care that a cuttle fish needs are not that much different maybe less harder to take care of then say a Mandarin Dragonet. You (I)need to think about what it means how will this effect your tank, invest in research on (cuttlefish) in this case, I have to make sure that I will be able to care of him or her (if I decide) with everything that they might need. I'm also undecided if I will make my 29 into just a cuttle tank or Not. I just want to let everyone know. That I'm not just going to put a cuttle fish into a tank not feed it the way it needs to be fed with bad lighting no filteration and so on just to see what happens or just becuase it's cool looking.(If I wanted to do that there are lots of different kinds of fish out there. I have taken in full account there eating habits, inking, size and knowing as much as I can about the Sepia officinalis (cuttlefish) family. I'm not done doing research on this. Alot of people wouldn't have the wonderful tanks that they do if they didn't try with the BEST of intention. Knowledge is power and I will get as much knowledge as I can about the Cuttlefish. Before purchasing it.
Thank you again to EVERYONE that has giving me any information or input. I really do appreciate it.

I would agree on that comparison with the mandarin, because cuttlefish can be fed more easily. However, there are considerations with flow, and lighting is often far less important. I would go so far as to say that they may not like intense lighting...so NO with more of an emphasis on the actinics may be fine. This is why I would still encourage keeping them in a species specific tank as opposed to combining them with anything else.

I would agree. I was just looking into the possability. I'm thinking of my 29g just for a certain type of cuddle fish that don't get as big as some of the others. I'm still undecided what to do. I'm still reading and doing research. I was on the computer last night for about 4 hours straight looking at information and reading. You are correct they don't need the MH lighting that would not be good. Also not a deep sand bed. and other things. If I do decide there will be only LR, Small amount of LS and the Cuttlefish. Although I'm still undecided.
Thank you for your help
