Culturing Base Rock

What is the best way to culture base rock? I have a 10 gallon tank to spare, or a 12 gallon rubbermaid thing.
What else would I need to make that base rock into some better looking rock for when I am ready to set up my bigger tank?

It would be best if you can get a few pieces of LR from a LFS to put with the base rock.

Oh ok.. would I be able to put alot in a 10 gallon tank and have it packed tight as long as LR was on top and there was a powerhead?
Do I need lighting for it?
Do I need a substrate for it?

Substrate, only if you want to liven-up some sand to add to the new tank.
Yes, powerhesd, Yes lighting, watch for excessive algae, about 10 hrs / day
Keep at around 80 degrees.
Say... 3/4 full 10 gal with LR on top, if you want more, just use a big tupper ware thing. Same results

Yup...
If you have a floresent light for the 10 gal, just use that.
Others may say no to this, but put it somewhere where so it would get afew hours of sun ligt too. (doesn't have to be direct sun).I did and had no algae blooms. just keep an eye on it. And if you are lucky, with the LR that you get, you could end up with 100,000 pods like I did.

Nope. Maby if I'm lucky :santa: will bring me a camera for Christmas.
The LR tank (30 gal) has about 5 inches by west expo of window. Next in line is the refu, total expo to window (4 foot tank). This flows through 4 more tanks, and then returns to the LR tank. I take LR and move it into the refu to grow more algae fast, then gets moved to other tanks. There were more hooked togeather, but I seperated some after a 55 gal meltdown.
All done by pump/siphon. The siphone tubes are full of thousands of pods.

Yep.
Or spend $5 and get a rubbermaid tub.
What I do is prob not something you would not want to try, unless you have an extra 20-30 feet of wall space, and want 250+ gallon of water around.... I need lots of algae to feed critters, thats why I do the sunlight thing.
The way you are doing it is just as good. Give it time.
I'm happy to see you are thinking ahead.

Yeah.. I figured this was probably the cheapest thing to do so that when I need to fill my future 90g tank with some LR.. I will have some and not have to spend $8/lb at my Fish Store.. $8 bucks is alot.. and it's not lightweight stuff.
Should I seed that base rock with Cured or Uncured Live Rock?

I prefer uncured because of the more extensive life forms in it.
Your not actully seeding it, more like curing it with the base rock. This will allow the spread of life to the base rock.
Well... I gess thats seeding too.
Make sure if you do use uncured, that the trites and annonia don't stay high for long periods. It will kill off some of the "goodies". (moniter / water changes if needed)

Since you want such a small amount, getting it from a LFS might be ok... sure you might pay more, but you can pick peices that you can really pack in your tank with the base rock and you don't have to worry about shipping charges and all of that headache... that is, if you have a LFS that sales decent lr?
