cured vs not cured LV

Live rock (LR).
When live rock is out of the water there is a certain amount of die off from things living on it.
Cured live rock has been put in a holding tank for a few weeks until it is safe(ish) to put straight in a display tank.
Uncured live rock would not be safe in a display tank as it would start an ammonia spike and may kill everything in there.
By the time live rock has been delivered to a shop on the other side of the world it is probably in need of putting in a holding tank to cure.
It all depends how long the rock has been out of the water as to how cured or uncured it is.

thanks,
I called my LFS today and they got more LV in today. I asked if it was cured or not and the person had to ask someone else. They came back and said it was curred. This is a Jacks pet store, do you think it is realy cured, or are they just trying to sell me rock today.

live rock, LR, is really smelly when it's not cured. so go down there and if it reeks like the ocean and dead fish, it's not cured, so you can grab that friggin liar by his collar and dunk his head into that stinky water a few times, just kidding. :D

I learned the hard way not to trust the LFS when they say the rock is cured. If it is being added to an established tank, I would suggest you put the LR in a bucket of saltwater with a powerhead and a heater for a few days and test it yourself.
