There are a ton of answers on this BUT Here are my credentials: 30 Years fresh water But only 1 year 2mo Salt (Different World-I'm Glad Nothing like it: I USED to always rely on Copper BUT DO NOT USE NOW due to Inverts. I've been told this and that. Here is what works for me. I raise my main tank to 85/86 immediately (takes about 12hrs or so) and no higher. Within about 3 or 4 days the ick hides away (I believe ick is always present). After 3wks I slowly lower back to 78 by a degree a day at a time. At first this method will scare you to death BUT I've been sucessful 4 times over the last 14 mo. I seem to get ick every time I add a new swimmer. I have a fantastic Rock Angel and It's blue sides Tattle for me if ick is present. He is a very hardy guy.
Lots of luck on the method you choose though. I hate to chase down a sick fish, knock off ick and scare everyone to death too. "Many Ways to reach goals".

I am with Saltfin I have also been in this hobby for over 25 years and have found that time and time again just bring up the tank temp will kill ick when they get to the free swimming stage.

I have used garlic soaked food in my reef tank twice now and it has worked both times.
My brother has used it once and it worked.
And many others have used it also and it has worked for them.
I do not personally know anyone that it has not worked for but have read posts on this board from people saying garlic soaked food did nothing for them.
It's your choice on what to do but i can tell you that no one or no book can tell me anything different from what I have learned through experience.
Good Luck !!!!

I wish some sharks would throw in a line or two.
I have 150 with plenty of rock which I have to
remove to catch most fish.I go thru full quarantine, monitor water quality religiously and
keep stable heat and environment...still the ick
will pop up and i have to wreck havoc on the tank... Sharks,, is there any validity to raising
the temperature????

Try to get yourself a copy of Freshwater and Marine Aquarium for the months of February and March 2001 there is a two part update on ick and its cures. Please note that Terry Bartelme shows all ways of treatng ick and note that hyposalinity cannot be used in a reef tank with live sand, live rock, corals, or invertebrates. Also in FAMA was a story on how to treat by moving the fish between two tanks every other day. Check it out and if you need a copy of the stories let me know and I will get them to you.

garlic soaked food and cleaner shrimp are one way that i use. I have 3 skunk cleaners in my tank. they have regular cleaning staions they have set up. the fish stop by on a regular basis to have their teeth cleaned. i had an ick outbreak and the shrimp in combo with the garlic the ick was easy!

Good afternoon elizreininger
Well I see you are now on your way to a ton of ways to deal with ick. Good luck - Just keep reading and listening and finally you will find a way that works for you. I sort it out sometimes by asking alot of people and considering how big their tank is, animals kept and the time it took them to get there. The way they got there was directly related to time, dollars and some headaches. They got nervous too! My todays advice might be (if you can bear to catch your fish) - Put it in a 10 gal. hospital tank by itself and use copper safe or the equiv. Always remember to use same water from main tank into Hosp. tank so all is equal keep the temp like main tank 78. Good Luck
