I wanna seed about 100 pounds of reef saver rock (basically dead rock). I wanna do this in my basement, which is kinda cool. Do I need a heater, or light to cure this rock? What's the best method?
I would think the more LR used the less time it would take to seed. IDK though.
Im pretty sure you can seed with a small amount of LR, maybe ten lbs? or a few cups of LS.
Good question.

Quit yelling!!!
Seriously, I would start with 10-20 pounds of good live rock. If you get some corraline algae, you can scrape it and scatter it in the tan and it will spread. Basically you will have to be patient and just let it cure.
I have plenty of live rock in my current tank but I don't want to introduce it to the dead rock. Reason: I have this brown Zenia all over the rock and DO NOT want it in my new tank. If there is any suggestion how to get this stuff off of the rock I will seed it with this rock.
If I'm trying to seed LR I wouldn't use any light.....just water changes, heater and a skimmer if possible......The coraline and such will come once it's in the display tank.

Really depends on your definition of "seed".
If just wanting to develop the bacteria to set up the biofilter then all you need is heat, flow, and an ammonia source.

Yup, thats what I'm prob gonna do. I have a skimmer sitting around actually so I will do that. Any suggestions on using the LR I already have? I just wanna make sure I don't get any of that Zenia on the new stuff. That shiz is SO UGLY!! Maybe a dip or good scrubbing? Anyone have this stuff on their LR before?
Only problem is I have a lot of coral on these rocks. Plus if I bleach I still have to seed it with something. Anyway, how do you bleach rock? Scrub, soak? What do you do? I assume you don't want to kill everything.
you send me all of your rock with xenia on it. I remove it and place it in my tank, scrub the heck out of the area where the xenia was that i cut off (all while keeping the rock moist) and then send it back to you. you have rock filled with bacteria and i have some more xenia for my tank LOL
could just be my tank but ive never seen xenia spread otehr than by contact with nearby rocks. so if you don't like the xenia, cut it off and scrub it in teh spot wehre it was attached to the rock till all you see is rock and then go ahead and use that rock for your seeding. If you didnt get it all it will grow back in the exact same place and you can easly disbatch it with kalk paste or vinager. applied directly to the coral.

Do you have any established LR without the Zenia on? If you do you could do an acid/bleach bath, and then rinse really well, and then you would need to cure the rock in fresh saltwater....There is a good thread on one of the other sites about this method.....I think Randy Holmes-Farley even is involved in the thread. After you have the rock flushed you could always reseed the "cooked" rock with a piece of established rock.....You don't need tons of established rock to seed your other rock....
