One more ? for all the guru's out there..Just got 30 lbs of premium uncured fiji..have it in an eclipse 29 to cure..do I have to take and scrub all the cool plants and algae off or can I just leave it alone and see what lives. P. S. I'm in no real hurry, I would rather wait awhile and have more life than scrub everything off and have bare rocks in a shorter period of time. hope I don't look stupid here, but I have to learn someway ...right..anyway..Thanks

I'd leave it alone...As the rock cures it will have natural die off.
There are no stupid questions in this hobby. :D

Hey Magic carp..thanks alot!!The orange rock is really neat..but I have picked it up in the tank and swished the white coating off 4 times now and this morning it was covered again !! I probably made a boo boo, but I took it out and fresh water rinsed it , ( the white slime was floating all in the tank when I would shake it around in the tank) and wow    my god did it WREAK:eek:  So anyway when I rinsed it off I noticed the water running off of it was turning orange..is this just a big sponge encrusted rock..it feels solid to me , or could it still be the orange coralline you were talking about??Wish I had a camera..I can see that is going to be the next saltwater investment I have to make..at any rate thanks for the help!!

Hey magic_carp, you make your own aqrocrete live rock right. I am going to make some to in the next week or so after hurricane ivan comes and goes. Do you add anything to make the rock more porous. I heard that people use crushed up pasta noodles. Also you use 4 parts portland cement and i part agranite right. I know how to do the hole process I just can't remember the recipe.

i treat uncured rock very well. First I'd pull off all the obvious Sponges. Then into a tank with good water flow, lights, and a heater.
I would do a 20% water change every time the Ammonia level exceeds 0.5ppm. This will take a lot of water but maximizes the critter population and the filtration efficiency of the rock.

well i tried the rice thing, and it sucked, it didnt do anything, just made the water worse, and it didnt disolve right away i dad to scrub them off, i didnt like doing the rice thing.
I use 4 parts Southdown sand, 2 parts crushed coral( you can use crushed oyster shells too, like me, but it looks really fake, and oyster shells raise the PH longer, so you ahve to cure it longer) and 2-3 parts portland cement.
i do that and it works great, for my mold i have cc, sand, oystershells, PVC shavings all mixed up, i just use 6 parts of the mold mix and 3 parts cement.
You want it to be messy, and wif you want to make a 3D figure, your going to have to make it first, and build out the front, let it harden for a day, then flip it over and build up the back, alot of the times your going to have flat rocks if you dont do that.
And just "slop" it on, i do it in layors, i add a layor of mix, them cover some in sand and make little tunnels of sand, then add another layor and do it again, them when it cures the water washes away the sand in the middle making nice big hole.
usualy if you have a drier mix, i add about 2 parts or less of water, and this makes my mix dryer, and mix a lot of air into it, it will make little holes for pods and worms. i like my mold to be mostly sand, with some PVC for coraline to grown on, and CC, but i like to use the CC in my mix, not my mold, you want the outside to be sandy, it looks alot more realistic to me
its not hard to make the rock, just hard to make it look real, but its really fun, and dont expect your first batch to look to good, it took me a while to get "good" at it.
I have some pictures of my rocks if you would like to see them

I like to see the pictures, and thanks for the tips ob making it. I am going to start building my canopy to day for my 46g bow front. I bought those metal halides from the person you told me to get them from, the same ones you got but I got the 175 watt metal halides with 13k bulbs. I was gonna get the 250 watt metal halides but I didn't want my tank to overheat. I am buying a icecap 660 ballast in a few days and i'm gonna get 4 25'' 75 watt vho bulbs actinic for my supplement. I was gonna go with 36'' bulbs but my tank is only 36'' long so I wouldn't be able to take the bulbs out without un screwing the endcaps.

I am going to set up a lagoon out of a big rubber maid container and put it in my garage or shed. Its gonna have a 6-7'' of southdown sandbed seeded by some sand from my tank. I'm gonna make like a 100-200 pounds of that diy liverock and put in some uncured florida liverock to seed it. I'm gonna grow cheatomorpha in there to. I'm gonna light it with 2 65 watt flourex lights from home depot, they got a realy yellowish color that makes the cheatomorpha grow like crazy. I'm hoping to get the coraline growing all over the rocks. I'll sell the stuff to my lfs and on ----.

You wont be able to see the rock in the first pircture. I use it to build up a nice base on the back of the tank to stack the live rock and homemade rock one.
exp. The rocks with the black dots is the baserock.
