curing live rock

if you mean leaving it out in the sun....then you should just buy some base rock cause you would just kill of any life and coralline algae. You need to keep the rock wet and in saltwater, heated water to be clear, with circulation. You cure live rock to get all the stuff that has died due to shipping of the rock before you put it in your tank so your levels dont spike. If you just left it out in the sun, if that is awhat you mean, then it wouldn't be live rock anymore plus who knows what kinda land bug would make it his new home and then be put into your tank.

dont forget about those pesky mosqittos, most annoying insect known to man...
I would personally just put it into a used tank and cure it there.

cboyfan2020 I don't mean leaving it out in the sun. I would put it in the shade under my overhang on my back porch. I am new to this hobby but please give me credit. I do know how to cure live rock. It will be in a rubbermaid, with a heater, & powerhead. and the water too.
I was just seeing if this was an option. We are planning on using some un-cured rock and I have heard about the smell it gives off when it's curing. We were planning on curing it right in our new 90 gal tank... thanks

I wasn't trying to put you down, your question was just really vague. I dont see why you couldnt cure it outside. The water movement would prevent any mosquitos but I would put like some window screen over the top just to keep bugs, leaves, etc. out of the water.

I know. I guess I should of been more clear. I decided not to cure it outside..I thought about the change in degrees outside might not be a good thing. I would have to monitor it way to often. Changes in the degree's from night and day. I just didn't want to smell that curing rock smell. Thanks

If you keep the container in the shade and covered then temperature swing would be minimal and it would cure just fine. You deserved the reply that you got with such a vague question in the new hobbiest forum.

Vague it was, but common sense would tell you that to cure live rock that comes from the ocean ,that you don't just plop it on the ground in the sun to cure it. I will make sure I choose wisely which forum's to post certain questions in. thanks

Your original question didn't seem vague to me.
You said "cure"
As far as actually doing it - not sure if I would. I think you've made the safe decision to cure it indoors.
An open window with a fan may help if the stink gets too bad :p
Have fun

I cured 90 lbs in a rubbermade tub indoors and the smell was not that bad. I put in the extra bathroom so if it did start to smell I could to on the vent fan. The worst put of smell came after I put all the rock in the tank and I had to empty out the containers, Part of that was my fault though, because I didnt do regular water changes.

Maybe I can't read anymore, but I thought that the title for this particular board was "New Hobbyists." Why'd you guys jump on someone, saying their question was too vague?!
I'm sure impressed to be in the presence of people who knew everything before they even got started in this hobby.... But for the sake of us "knowledge challenged" people, how about cutting us some slack if we don't get it just right the first time around? Makes me nervous to post any questions... :(

Thanks Dave,
That's what I thought this forum was for....for New Hobbyists to ask ?'s. and that's what I did. I have no clue what Jlem was talking about when he wrote this:
"You deserved the reply that you got with such a vague question in the new hobbiest forum"
. If you don't as Questions you will never learn...Am I right?

blue if you are going to get uncured shiped direct then you may want to do it outside in the shade because the smell may vary from rock to rock the problem with outside is you want to make sure as the sun moves the tuperware stay in the shade
another thought is if your tank is new and you have a protien skimmer do it in your tank with your skimmer runing and water changes will keep smell down

thanks David,
yes it will be uncured rock shipped to us. If we do cure it outside it will be on the side of our house which gets no sun. Oh! by any chance does the smell from the curing rock smell anything like burning horse manure ? lol my neighbor burns his manure and when your outside in the summer time it stinks so bad....Just thinking about revenge...lol JK :D
Thanks again.

Blue, I would like to personally apologize for thinking you were going to cure the rock outside on the ground or something. I didn't say that is what you meant if you re-read my original post but that is was my impression from what the ? was. I have seen people who thought that was ok so again I apologize. I din't mean to offend you. I am a new hobbyist as well. In fact I think anybody w/o 25 years of experience(exaggerated) is a new hobbyist because we all learn something new every day. Once again I am sorry.
