Curing LR and ammonia is at 8.0

Good morning guys.
Vanquish is correct, In a ventilated room I doubt you could get 300ppm unless that was some seriously nasty LR.
However,in an enclosed space this can be dangerous. I was concerned that maybe it were in a basement with no way to vent the air. 300ppm is not much concentration. I hope I did not scare you but better safe then sorry.
I'm an aircraft inspector and I always have the "safety mode" on.
Good luck with your rock, it will eventually be worth all the effort. I never buy pre-cured rock, (just too darn expensive) and it has worked out well for me every time.

Okay, now my ammonia is at 1.0, I had trites of 0.25 two days ago, no nitrates.
My readings today are:
ammonia 1.0
trites 0
trates 0
What's up with that? Why didn't my trites spike any higher? IS THIS ROCK EVER GOING TO BE CURED???

Hi alyssia,
So how long total has this rock been curing?
Are you sure all the big stuff is washed off? Large amounts of dying creatures can definately prolong the cycle time.
I know you're probably getting worried, first time I cured any I thought "Oh my gawd, is this ever going to end?"
Remember the amount of water in your can is greatly reduced from the displacement of all that rock. So a 40 gallon trash can may actually only have half that much water. This greatly concentrates the ammonia and trites.
I am confused as to the strange readings. But hey, look at it this way you've gone this far can't stop now!

Has the smell gotten any better? I use the smell test as a real indicator. If it has a clean ocean smell it is really close. If it has any
bad odor, not yet.
Chin up, keep smiling. One day this will be a funny story.

It has been curing for about 3 weeks total now. It does still have a little bit of a bad odor, but nothing like before.

3 weeks is not out of the ordinary.
I have had some that took as long as 6 weeks.
Don't get discouraged.

On the note of the H2S gas...if you can still smell it, it hasn't reached 300ppm :)
Basically, as long as your basement stinks, you're in the clear (mostly) although ventilation is a definite must.

I see where youre getting your idea, but much better to play it safe when it comes to gas. Like you said ventilation is a definite must.
