curing LR

Hi
I just spent 2 weeks curing my LR in the garage. I waited for the ammonia to spike and then drop to zero. I was scrubbing it and doing 100% water changes every 3 days. Once it was clean, I landscaped the tank. That was a week and a half ago. Ammonia is still at 0, But my NitrItes are through the roof. So I have now bought an R/O filter. My question is, did I not cycle the tank because I cured it in the garage? Should I go ahead and get a damsel, and start the cycle over again?
And how long do I to change out this water before I get an algea bloom. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm worried.
Thanks for any help. matt

Let me verify this. You cured your liverock in the garage. Then you put it in the tank? Now you say the water in the tank has high nitrites, or the water that was with the liverock? If the water in the tank has high nitrites, then your tank is in the process of cycling. I would just wait until the nitrites go down, and then add a hardy fish. I WOULD BE CAREFUL about adding a damsel. i had problems with the ones that I added. You need to know that they tend to be aggressive.
Now if you are saying that the nitrites are high in the water that was in the garage, then you need to cycle your tank. YOU SHOULD NEVER CYCLE YOUR TANK WITH A FISH. You just need to use a cocktail shrimp. Through it in the tank, and let it rot. test the levels, and when the ammonia spikes you can take the shrimp out of the tank. This will start your cycle.
