Curing LR

I have got some LR from a reef and put it in my 2ft aquarium to cure. What are the best steps to take to effectivly cure it. I have noticed black string tipe worms on the rock are these things good or bad. Also there is like blotches of white stuff ( like paint on the rock) I am running my heater and a powerhead, no lights. How often does the water need changing or do you need to do it????

every two or three days do a 50% water change, until ammonia nitrate and nitrite are all at zero;
the white is just dead corraline algea and will be replaced with nice red or purple corraline soon.
i'm not sure about the worms though

You can brush off the white with a toothbrush it is dead tissue. I did 100% water changes 3 or 4 times until my levels were 0. Everything went fine but make sure it is cured before placing it in your tank.

A couple of weeks should do the trick. The long black worm is harmless if its the one I have. It comes out at night and splits at one end like a fork in the road. Forgot the name, but I did look it up in the invert book at my LFS. Got him as a hitcher on a 10lb rock I bought. Don't know if yours will survive the curing process though.
