Curing rock

I have read so many different listed threads on this but am still a little confused. Here is the run down, I ordered some cured rock from Florida and I live in California, it took 5 days to get here. We had the rubbermaid container all set up with the salt water and 2 powerheads, as soon as it got here we put it in. The next day and everyday after we have scrubbed off any and all die off and changed the water. We have done this for 5 days now and I am still getting ammonia level elivated. Am I doing something wrong or is it still just not ready yet?

btw.. they say to try and do a 50% water change every week.. but i think you should do that slow when you add your water back in. want to make die off as little as possible i would imagine.

It took me about 5 weeks to cure "already cured" florida rock before I could put it in my tank and I live in Oklahoma (about 3 days shipping). If it came only wrapped in wet newspaper, than it's not cured anymore. May not be so bad if it came shipped in water. Most live rock that is labeled cured when it is shipped has to be recured. Lots of die off takes place during the shipping process.

Well mine came wrapped in newspaper so I guess I have a ways to go before I can put it in my tank.
If I would have known I think I would have just bought it locally even if I would have paid a little more. Oh well you have to learn somehow. So hey how often do you do water changes and how much? Thanks for your input.
