Hi all, question??? I have a 75 gallon tank about a year and half old! 5 fish and starting to
add different types of corals. I have always ran carbon in my tank however wondering if its pulling nutients out of water that corals might need????? please give me your opinions???

I don't really think it pulls out enough good nutrients to be an issue for corals. It does pull out nutrients, good and bad, but the bad is far outweighed and I won't run a tank without carbon.

check into chemi-pure Elite. It has all the benefits of being carbon, but also has the good stuff for your corals too. Its not much more than the basic chemi-pure and it worth it. I have it in my system.

I never run a tank without carbon. I recommend buying a good carbon. The chemi pure elite that Monsinour mentioned is good. Look for one that says it does not leach phosphates (even though they still might).
I'm an idiot!

ChemiPure Elite actually has a phosphate remover in it for this purpose. That is the difference between regular ChemiPure and the Elite - the phosphate remover. I think ChemiPure Elite is the best carbon option available.

I love Chemi-Pure and have used it for many years. The phos remover in the Elite is a good idea; but it is just CP plus ferric hydroxide. The FH works great on phosphate & silicates, but is exhausted long before the Chemi-Pure is. I think you get better results and save money, using regular Chemi-Pure full time and another phos remover as needed. If you need to run a phos remover full time (you shouldn't have to): an aluminium based remover (like Phos-Guard) will last longer, but not act as fast. Chemi-Pure lasts 4-6 months but the ferric hydroxide that makes it "Elite" lasts only a few weeks. After this few weeks, you are running plain Chemi-Pure anyhow.

Avoid Aluminum based Phosphate reducers if you have leather corals.
Anyone claiming to manufacture GAC thats lasts for more than a few days in saltwater will have to prove it to me.

Do you consider Chemi-Pure a GAC? It seems more "processed than "granulated'; but I sure am no scientist. If you do, I think I can dig something up. At one time, I saw no value in carbon in SW tanks and had my mind changed. I have used a bag of CP , that had been used at least 4 months, in a HOB filter, and removed copper from my 55 gal QT in no time. Hardly scientific, but I can find something better, I think. Oh yeah, Tetra used to make a methelyne blue based velvet treatment that was excellent, "Tetra-Oomed' or something like that. I kept a well-used bag of CP just to remove that stuff, which it did. Water went from blue tint to clear almost instantly. BTW, you sure don't hear much about velvet anymore, I wonder why?

I absolutely see value in using GAC in SW aquariums. I've never seen any evidence that the benefit lasts more than a few days without changing the GAC.

I agree that the phosphate remover in the Elite is gone long before the carbon is insufficient, but to me, it helps, especially to those that are afraid of carbon leaking phosphates into their system.
I run a PhosBan and use Elite just because the price difference isn't that much to me.

Sure. Either way, Chemi-Pure is a great product and an essential for me.
