HIya,
pods. I've got plenty in there right now, but what happens if they all die out? OR I buy a fish that eats them all (six-line wrasse, not a manderine). Is my tank still healthy or should I try to grow more?

They are particulary necessary for the sandbed, as detritus eaters they are part of a healty system. I would try to always have some in stock. Some buld 10 gallon pod tanks just for this purpose.

Hiya,
Thanks Thomas. Though, this lead to another question. I've got CC in my tank along with a peppermint shrimp, emerald crabs, some scarlet hermits, turbo's and nassarius snails. Would these not help turn the CC if the pods disappeared?
Meadbhb
Your other clean up crew would not turn over much of the crushed coral to any significant degree, the hermits might pick up the top pieces to gleen some algea of off, but with regards to cc being benifical to the tank like sand is then there is no comparison. You would be turning over the cc when ever you vaccum it anyway, and you would have to vaccum it, cc is the single most nitrate producing trap that I know of.
