I just have to know............and I'm depending on your honesty here. Just who all out there actually got interested in this for real after watching "Finding Nemo"?
Yes, I'm guilty but what is leading me to this question is all the newbies posting our wishlists for things like blue hippo tangs, clownfish,...........and porcupine puffers?!
Brother Bloat will sadly never see the inside of my tank, but he was so endering in that show.
Oh and let's no forget the weekend I spent looking for MountWannaHawkALoogie.........only to realize what I really needed was LR:rotfll: (About $200 of it as I recall)
So let's hear it...will any body else fess up?

I got started after an absence from FW tanks. My friend had started me on these when i was about 15 years old. after 16 i stopped for awhile. then i asked for a SW tank for my birthday! I was happy. No movie encouraged me.

Got my first FW aquarium 40 years ago for my birthday. (15 gal with the slate bottem). So I gess you could say it took 38 of those 40 years to get up the nerve to try SW.
Haven't seen Finding Nemo.

I'll admit that I am guilty. My family and I saw "Finding Nemo" and my kids wanted a saltwater tank. We have been introducing many of the species from the movie and they are named after the fish in the movie.
However, I don't think that it was a spurious decision. I am not a newcomer to aquariums. I have had freshwater tanks for around 30 years. I even had a saltwater tank 17 years ago for around 6 months before everything died. That was back before live rock got popular. I put the tanks away before our last move six years ago while we were starting a family but always knew I would start up again.
The movie is great and proved to be the impetus into a new hobby.

I've kept FW tanks on and off through out my life and only a few years ago did I finally made the plunge into SW, owing alot to my love of the ocean.:)

I kept fw for many years and told myself I would get a reef when I finished college and had money...what a joke. I am finished with my undergrad, have a nice reef, but money is still missing. Perhaps the reef and the lack of money are related somehow:thinking:

no movie here made me do it, its my love for this type of ecosystem or environment. have always loved fishing(catch and release mostly) but i love the interaction between these fish and there environment(salt and freshwater). i cannot stop watching because something will always change no 2 days are alike.

I think if anyone started this time intensive hobby because of a cartoon...your tank is gonna suffer...

i used to be the department manager in aquatics at pet co. ..and i used to keep a 300G parahna tank..with four full sized dimond back parahna's...and they got boring..so when i was working i used to look at all the salt water reef tank magazines...and think in my head that it would be really fun and more challanging to try and do one of those...so i went out and bought a 50g and jump in it..and then quit pet co....dont ever buy fish there...trust me:sneaky:

Ha ha, what's wrong with buying fish at *****?
I loved the lionfish on Deuce Bigolo, Male Gigolo and since then wanted one but i didn't even get a FW until my GF moved in with me. Now i got a FW full of African Cichlids and a couple Plecos and i'm working my way to building my 30G tank, now it just has one 4 stripe Damsel, my other SW fish are in the 10G that's leaking.............
I sit and watch my fish eat, is that lame or does anyone else do that too???

I also used to have freshwater fish for many years. We gave everything away when my family moved. I was also heading to college and my parents didnt want the responsibility of the tank.
Fast forward to the present....my two daughters happened to watch the movie (Nemo) and were bugging me to get a tank. I ended up getting an Eclipse system 6 for freshwater. They were hooked. I was also, but then I realized, no one in my "neck of the woods" (that I know of) has saltwater. I thought it would be a nice addition So, I got as much info as I can, read up on it, and will probably be starting up, in two weeks.
