Get a good brand PSU. That 500watts might not mean much if its a cheap PSU otherwise 500 should be plenty I personally have a 480watt PSU and it seems to be more than enough.

as long as you buy compatible parts I don't see how you could mess up the install. Its pretty much plug and play when it comes to building a pc.
I would also suggest getting 2x512mb or 1x512 and getting another 512 later if you don't want to spend the extra money.
The 3400+ I believe are only socket 754 he should probably go with something socket 939 since its newer and is replacing the 754. I should say get a PCI E 6600GT.
Maybe amd pcie boards aren't out yet. I thought they were, if they are not they should be soon. I know the nforce4s will have PCIE and support SLI. I have a 754 dfi board myself I kept hearing about PCIE for amd so I figured they'd be out by now.
