If its not tempered glass..........it should be labeled tempered if it is somewhere on it.

yes if its not tempered glass youre cutting through. we recently drilled a hole in my friend's 20gallon long aquarium. we used a diamond hole saw bit, started at an angle until we made a groove for it the bit, used a lot of water until we were done and that was it. we went slow when we drilled
if you dont know if your aquarium is tempered call the company and ask them. my friend's aquarium is a tank made by AGA, which is now Aquaeon i think

This isn't a hard-and-fast rule, but typically on tanks up around 50g and larger, only the bottom is tempered.
As stated, always check with the manufacturer first because if you start drilling tempered glass, it's game over man!
