Cyano again...need help

Hey All.....
A few weeks ago I posted with a question....
something like... is it cyano or coraline.....
I brought a sample in to a friend to look at and
he said it was definitely cyano....
its purple tho and covering my entire sand bed...
all major water tests come up excellent...even phosphate !!!
This is a fish only with live sand 125 gal tank....dead corals...
everthing is covered...except glass
My top-offs are done with tap water/amquel....
I already posted on the Equip/DIY board for info on RO/DI units...
Please tell me what I have to do or add to get rid of this...

Low flow areas
Nitrate/Phosphate/Dissolved Organic Wastes
How long to you light the tank each day ?
What type lighting ?
How old ?
Is your tank near a window that receives natural light ?
Describe you tankwater circulation in detail/
Do you have powerheads that force water from the bottom of the tank .. on up to the surface ? You must have good tankwater circulation in all areas of the tank.
Even though the test kits report back low nitrate/phosphate - it's still possible to have cynobacteria.
Are you running a protein skimmer ?
Do you run activated carbon ?
I would imagine that using tapwater is a major cause as well .. if not the biggest cause. All depends.
Normally - it's a combination of all or most of the above that leads to major outbreaks of cyno as you're described ?
Lastly .... describe your tank's filtration, the animals in your tank and your feeding habits.
What do you feed the tank and how often.
Sorry for so many questions - but's it's important to know everything when trying to solve problems - and preventing them in the future

well just had a case of cyno and it was in a high flow area only. Just bought some stuff simply called (red slime remover). Added it yesterday afternoon and this morning all gone. The only thing is this stuff is like 19.00 for a small bottle. And none of the corals were affected

1- tank lights are on 11 hrs. day
2- regular flouresant bulbs...about 11 months old
3- tank is not near any windows
no powerheads in tank as the return pump is a
Mag-Drive #1800 and moves a great amount of water....
it is open all the way and not torqued down
Yes, I am running a protein skimmer 24/7
A Kent Marine Nautilus TE turbo-eductor w/a Mag-Drive #700
Yes, I have Chemi-Pures inside my sump
SLS 200gal. wet/dry w/bio-balls- Mag-Drive #1800 return pump
25 watt UV sterilizer w/ a Mag-Drive #250
couple of tangs, angel, file, chromis, blue leg crabs
tank is fed every other day...pellets, flakes,nori
fed alternately...not overfeed...on off-days...a few flakes

The chemi-pure is only 2 months old....
if you read my long post answering all of Broomers
questions...that will give you an idea of everything
that I have going in my tank....
the problem is that I have a nice size filefish and he likes
to chew on things...so I really cant put a powerhead
in the tank for safety reasons....he once chewed a glass
hydrometer in half when I went to test salinity...as soon
as it entered the water....whack,he got it...LOL
my tank has 2 overflows/2 returns on a Mag-Drive #1800...
is this enough water movement?
if you have any other suggestions for placing powerheads
safely into my tank...just let me know...much appreciated...
Can I use Chemi-clean safely in my system...?
I have Live-sand and a wet/dry w/bio-balls...

Mac,
I too used that product. It got rid of the cyno but made the tank look poor. Alot of the coloration left the corals for a while but came back. This was in an LPS and Leather tank. Don't know what affect it would have had on an sps tank.
It will get rid of the cyno though!

Thanks for checking...
I do not have any cyano inside my sump...
its dark purple and only on the sand bed and dead corals...
all over ....thick...you can actually pick up chunks of it
with the sand still attached to it underneath and it stays
together....does that make sense...?

MARINEROCK - just got through battling cyano - did a 20% water change and cut the lighting cycle down to roughly 2 1/2 hours per day ..... 3 days later everything looks a lot more normal. Oh also added new carbon to my filter as well. Keeping fingers crossed when I go back to regular lighting and feeding that ti will stay away .... think I was over feeding!!

Did you add any Chemi-clean or anything else to
remove it....or just the water change and lights on
for only 2 1/2 hrs. a day...?
Also, are you using RO/DI or tap water ?

Water flow is WAY too weak, and I bet half the cause.....I have 2700 gallons per hour on my 90 gallon......you have a 125 with a single pump moving water......there's no way waste doesn't settle on the substrate and cause nutrient pockets which cyano thrives on....also the very weak bulbs on a big tank with an 11 hour on period........good chance that regardless of the spectrum they put off.....it has a lot of red by the time it hits the bottom....light chages spectrum as it goes through water. I believe you definately need to find a way to add more water movement. I run absolutely No filters, skimmers, or any external cleaning item at all......the only thing in my tank is powerheads.....not a single spot of cyano....water movement also keep the gas exchange high, and keep oxygen in good levels.....algae HATES oxygen rich water...oxygen is actually their waste, and they have no use for it....I suggest no snake oils, and recommend you add flow somehow.

hello marinerock.
in my tank i had a major prob w/ cyano w/ previous lightbulb setup. i was using those $5 G.E. specials from lowe's because i had read elsewhere that they could be pushed by Icecap 660's w/o any problems.
it worked, and i had all the light i needed, but i discovered that the light spectrum was all wrong. by the eye, the g.e.'s leaned toward the yellow side of light (i think the actual rating was 5500K) and became the proud owner of several square feet of cyano.
i went about 1 month in which i kept the lights off. i replaced those lights w/ 2 actinics and 2 10.k lamps (all vho) and i don't have a problem w/ cyano. yes it visible in the tank, but only a couple of square inches worth. even now i only clean the glass once or twice weekly.

Please, I have no idea about lighting for a FOWLS tank
and need this information,as I thought this was all ok lighting...
I have a 6' long Perfecto strip light with 4 (36")bulbs that
right now are the flouresants that come with the unit...
Please tell me exactly what I should ask for at my LFS
to replace these with ....we do like the look of the blue light,
however, whatever you guys say to buy to correct
this problem and put the proper lighting on my tank, I will buy !
Also, Sammy...please check my thread in equip/DIY...
"need info RO/DI units" and tell me which one to purchase...
