Im in the same boat as you...the only thing that seemed to work was blasting a powerhead in the worst area of it....which i just started yesterday. I personally dont think that reducing the "photoperiod" really helps, IMO. Try using a powerhead!

I had that problem creap up, the issue is that there are phosphates/nitrates that the bacteria is feeding off of. What worked for me is that I also used a powerhead to 'blow' the bacteria off the LR and I mixed up the sand burying it in under a layer of it. Then I did a 30-40% water change and followed up by making sure that I didnt overfeed my tank, and did more frequent water changes keeping nitrate levels really low and removing excess phosphate as well. I had purchased the anti bacteria powder as well but didnt use it. Just as a side note i use alot of macro algae (spaghetti) for both nutrient uptake and fish food which I know has helped control not only Cyano but other types of typical nusance algae breakouts. What I mean by alot is that I have a 135gal reef and and use it to 'decorate' the tank, some in the center, some on each side with a powerhead very close to each one to ensure water is flowing though it. Good luck.

ok thanx, :cheer: sorry i havent gotten back on this,
ive been busy with soccer and xc all week
my lfs said the same thing about high phosphates and the bacteria feeding the algae
he said to use a gravel vacuum to siphon the sand and move it around and that will help alot
and also something called "Phos-zorb", i think;its like in a little white bag and you put it in the filter and it absorbs phosphates
but its been a week and a half since i started this and the tank looks alot better
and my fish are fine!!!!
my rusty angel will be a year old in October!!!!

Try Antri-Red. Just add one cap full per 10gallons. Remove any carbon, and the skimmer will go nuts, but it will decipate within a couple of days. I did this with my 10g, and I have had 0 problems after that. Test your water that you are using, prior to adding it to your tank. It could be the problem.
