Is it possible to add a hob filter on the tank to hold your carbon? I was told by a crew member on the WetWeb that carbon ideally must be replaced every 10-14 days. If it is in the Fluval, this can be time consuming and a pain, not to mention that out of sight out of mind kind of thing. I have a set up very similar to yours, and I use the fluval for large particulate removal only. I am faithful in cleaning it once a month with new (recycled) filter pads. I only use it now for this alone, no carbon in the baskets at all, they are left empty.

If it's changed often it's fine left to long, it is like any other object, that can collect junk.

Like I said, if you left it in the system forever, and didn't touch it.
