I've been trying to do some research on this but haven't had much luck.
Some say that it's blue-green and others red-purple(even black.)
I have a bloom of red purple hairy algae on one area of my substrate.
Does anyone know what it is and is it bad?
Is it cyanobacteria?

I've had the same problem lately. Do a water change, git out as much algea as possible.I'm gonna start using RO water this weekend, when I do my water change. Hopefully this will work for both of us.
