Cycle Questions?

I just started to cycle my tank yesterday. I put in the store bought shrimp to start the cycle. I have a couple of questions. Here is my setup:
29g
50 lbs LR
70 lbs LS
130W PC's
I would like to know how long I should leave on the lights to minimize algae?
How often should I take water readings?
When should I turn on my skimmer after the cycle is done or during?
How long will it take for the tank to clear up from the sand?
I will take some pics to see how you like the rock work when it gets cleared up a little.

Lights - IMO, no longer than 4-6 hrs/day during cycling, if at all.
Test daily.
Skimmer is probably not necessary until after the cycle.
Sand cloudiness should settle in 7-10 days.

daily is good, but you could get away with every other day if you want to be daring
If you have a cannister filter, carbon is good to polish and clean water, although its only natural and it will setttle.
