My tank has been up and running for about a year. I needed more rock in it and so I added base rock to the tank. All of a sudden im getting what I think is diatom?? Its brown and sticking to the rocks comes off pretty easy with a turkey baster. Its almost growing faster than I can remove.

Ok... Tell us a little bit more about this base rock. What could be on this dead rock that would die and cause a cycle?

Its just white base rock. I rinsed it off and put it in the tank. My skimmer is going crazy since this has happened. The skimmer has never filled up so fast before. I tested for nitrates and it was in between 05-10ppm

No ammonia or nitrites noticed? Were your nitrates lower than that before? If you answer NO then I am stumped.

My other test kits ran out I think its time I replaced them. Everthing was going fine test every month or so. All tests came back well within range. Nothing out of order except the new rock. Also new t5's could it be the lights?????

If theres silicate in the rock, and I believe theres a good chance there would be, then you will get a diatom bloom.
