Cured rock will have more than enough bacteria to handle any ammonia. Back to the original question, it was not the magic solution that was added, it was the rock.

well i was going to clarify but didnt, the rock i put in the 55 was less than 10 lbs originally. the cycle had started and was showing little ammonia and the nitrite was climbing....i finally got all the parts to get the sump going and I added the smallest bag of "instant cycle" sand in one section of the sump. in less than 3 days the nitrite was gone..there was no decline, it was gone....
as far as the 120, i didnt add any rock until a few days after i added that substrate.....
