cycling question.

I'm ready and anchous to start cycling my tank but I just realized that I don't have any shrimp.
Does it have to be a shrimp or could it be anything that'll rot?
I have some frozen mussels.
Would dropping one of those in my tank for a few weeks work just as well?

you can go to any grocery store and buy 1 coctail shrimp. it will cost you pennies...
