Cycling

Hello, I received about 75lbs of LR and 80pnds of LS from an established aquarium (in the area). I have added that to my new tank. Do I need to put a shrimp in to cycle the tank still? Thanks...

I would ghost feed your tank as if you have a fish or two in there. Do that every day or every other day for about a week and test for ammonia and nitrite. There's a good chance that you will show zero which means you have enough bacteria to break down the food and if so it is safe to begin adding fish (slowly). If the rock and sand was exposed to the air you can expect die off and you may see a mini spike. It really depends on the transport of the rock/sand and how long it was out of the water.

Thank you for your help. The LR was kept wet and still has most of the purple coloring to it. Is this good? The sand has some creatures moving threw it still. I added some of the sand to my sump...

yeah, its good for the live rock to be purple and the live sand to have things crawling through it(but remember if you hear clicking in your tank, dont go digging around its probably a mantis shrimp and that will snap the crap out of your finger)

nah, shut em off and ship them to me, I'll check them out and see if they work on my tank and will return them in 2-3 years.
Some run them some don't. There isn't a whole lot in there that needs the lights right now so you can save some power by not running them. At the same time, if you run them when you get that algae bloom those lights will keep that algae very happy so it may be best not to run them.
If you do have some cool stuff on your rock (I had a lot of macro algae, feather dusters, etc) then run em, but you don't need all those lights going just for that.

If all the lr and sand came from that other tank, you won't have much of a spike. but if you put other sand in their from the lfs you probably will.

Shutting them down and wrapping them up now... ;) Their is a few things I can see alive. What light would you suggest to use at this time?
Yes the lr and ls came from the same tank. I plan on getting more from established tanks in the area in the next coming week.
Thank you for your help...
