I just recently set up a 20g long tank I would like to know how much lr just to cycle and then as time goes on I will add more but I need to know the bare minimum to start the cycle.

You can start your tank cycling with no LR actually. All you need is something to start it, like a raw shrimp to creat ammonia.
Of course, LR will speed it up, and offers more surface area for bacteria, etc., to grow on.
My 20 gallon tank only has 7 pounds of live rock in it, and it cycled in 6 weeks. Mine is a 20 high tank, though, so more rock would look better in your tank since it is long rather than high.
