Damn protein skimmer.....So much water on the floor

So yesterday while I was at work, my skimmer decided to fill up and start overflowing with water. No one was home. When I got home at about 530 pm, my tank was missing a good 5-6 gallons of water. Now my ceiling in my kitchen, which is directly under my room with the tank is going to be ruined. FML.
Anyway to avoid such a catastrophe in the future?

If the skimmer is new....and not tuned in yet.....don't run it while you are not home

i must of had it for atleast 2-3 months tho.. i dont know why it went nuts on me

HMMM...Did you add any different foods or vitamins? Maybe something got in the tank..

is this a HOB skimmer or was it in your sump???

I read thru some of your posts...did you try making a HOB skimmer out of a sump designed skimmer?
