on sunday iam getting my tank set with 45lbs of live sand and an emp.400 should i add a 1$ dollar damsel to start the cycling process also the only things i am going to have are the live sand filter and a rock so it should be easy to catch the damsel

If that's your plan - get some yellow tail Damsels - three, - let them chase each other around for a while and then bring them back to the store.

cycling is hard on the fish, but if you really want fish(it is difficult to have a n empty tank and watch the cycle)
damsels are a good choice, or if you want something cheap, some lfs's acclimate mollies to sw just for cycling, they are heartier and cheaper, either will do, but damsels you may wish to return depending on your future stocking, the can be bullies

i wouldnt just get one and hope it doesnt disturb your other fish cause youre not gonna be happy. ive never seen a yellow tail damsel that is not aggressive. if i were you id skip the fish for right now and throw in a piece of raw shrimp. let it rot in your tank until your tank cycles then you can start to get the fish you really want without having to put damsels through the cycle. this way you will also not have any aggressive fish in your tank. also from when i tried it and from what other people say on this board it seems to work faster that way.

just put shrimp from the grocery store in and let them sit in there for a while...they will stink but they will cycle your tank just fine. Don't go killing fish! It's not nice.

just cause you dont plan on killing any fish doesnt mean theyll live through the cycle of your tank. you might not lose any damsels, but you really might. besides damsles are aggressive and will be a pain in your @$$ later.
