i come home from work and noticed my pipe organ looked like it holes in it. i came back a little later and it was worse, then i saw it. my emerald was chowing down on the pipe organ. he destroyed a large part of the coral. luckily i pulled the coral out and grabbed him. i threw him in my nano that only has live rock and two snails in it. have any of you had htis experience before.
i thought they were reef safe. keep an eye on them!!

Not your specific problem but I am having yellow polyps disappear and the only thing I have seen near them other than a snail is one my emerald crabs, the same one a number of times.

I've seen comments about emeralds doing this sort of thing numerous times...but its been my experience that emeralds tend to scavenge the weak/diseased and dead...I've never had a emerald attack healthy living tissue.I've always had 3-4 emeralds in my reef along with a brittle star/fish/snails/crabs/shrimp...and numerous corals...they have never been a problem in my reef...but they do an excellant job of scavenging.

Hmmmmmmm - Well now you have me wondering. I'm about to add some fish to my tank and I got a free offer from SWF.com for 3 free emeralds if I place my order today. Do you think I should take them up on this?
I don't have any corals yet, but do want some. I'm going to get some clown fish and maybe a small school of chromis to start with. I also have 2 pink tipped and 1 carpet anemone, 2 peppermint shrimp and one dang damsel that I'm in the process of catching! I hope:rolleyes:

Ditto on what NM Reef said. I've never not had emeralds. Never had a problem with them attacking anything. The only thing I've ever witnessed was the other day one was in a bunch of hair algae & was somewhat indiscriminate & tore out some tiny feather duster/tube worms.
