I dont care about the flow, I just dont want my sump or tank to overflow because I dont have enough flow. One lfs said the rio will work good, another said the rio will cause my sump to overflow.
Flow has every thing to do with it. You pick pumps by their flow rate. If its too big it will overflow your tank and if its too small then the filter is useless so.....
What size tank
Type of overflow box, describe it or brand, model or max. flow rate and
What brand model, size and flow rate is the sump.
Sorry, I dont know the brand of the overflow box however Jcrim does, let me ask him. But it has to holes where you put in the vacuum tubes (forgot the name of what its called) and theres 2 U-tubes and 2 sponges. The brand model of the sump is just a 30gal tank. I dont have it hooked up yet.....actully I dont have it yet. And I'm going to need 2 pumps?? Will a Mag-drive 9.5 work for the return pump?
OK. A typical double U tube type OFB with 1 inch fittings can/should handle around 1000+ gph flowing out your tank to the sump. The more water draining into the sump , the more turbulance so the more bubbles that have to get baffled out in the sump befor the pump pumps the water back in to the main tank ( size please ) You can use a return pump that does not pump more gph back to the main tank than what the OFB can handle. A mag 9.5 should be fine with that OFB.
Always a good thing to put a T and a valve on the return line to the main with the one line going back to the sump and the other line to the main tank so if the pump is to big or its just more flow than you want then you can adjust it to allow the extra flow to return back to the sump thru the T and valve. You can use 2 smaller pumps that total the amount of flow together if you want to. HTH
So theres no rio pumps that will work? Man, I'm looking for something thats not a outrages price. $80+ I cant stand. I cant aford that for just a pump. So this kind of pump wont work? https://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=6
A 1" bulkhead has a drain rating of 600gph. If your overflow box has 2 bulkheads, then your overflow would be 1200 gph. You would need a pump with less than that, something around 1100 gph. If your pump has more than that, just put a tee in your returnline with a ball valve on the tee going back to your sump. This way you can regulate the flow with the ball valve.
