DBURR,
Below is something I read under the topic of "When to upgrade lights" that you wrote and my question is very "newbie". How do you know when your tank is CYCLED?
I am relativly new at this but I have had a 40 reef since april of last year. To date I have 35 lbs of very LR and crushed coral (unfortunatly, I now wish I had gone with LS, and will when I transfer this system to a 55). I have 2 condy anenomes, 2 flower anenomes, a coral banded, an urchin, 2 percs,a large brittle star, and a lawnmower blenny.
Back to the point, I don't know what "cycled" means. I am hoping you could help me out with a little education or refer me to a place where I can find that info.
Thank you

Royce one question,
you have live rock in your 45 gal?
I precycled 200lbs of southdown in a can for 2 weeks before it went in the tank. I added the sand and exsisting lr together. My tank cycled in 6 days!!! Yours may do the same if my assumption is correct
:) :D

I'm not Dburr but I can tell you what "cycled" means....it's when your Ammonia and Nitrite cycles have completed.
When you start to add waste into your tank it bacteria brakes it down turning it into Ammonia, that is broken down into Nitrite, and that is broken down further into Nitrate. Ammonia and Nitrite's are poisionous to fish...so your tank is cycled then there is no tracible amounts of these in your water.
