Dead coral

Hi all,
i have a piece of dead coral that came directly out of ocean about a year ago. would this be a good addition to my fuge?

Yes, you need to bleach it and rinse it very well first . I would also put it in a quarantine tank so that any thing that may be stuck in the rock can leach out before it gets into your tank.

Hi:
For what it's worth, I would not use bleach to clean the coral. If it has really been out of the water for a year, you are probably very safe. A quick dunk in some boiling water should kill anything (terrestrial) from getting into the tank via the dead coral.
My partner and I commonly bring home coral with a special shape or special meaning from diving trips. (We're talking dead coral that washed up on shore, and only from locations where it is legal to take that.)

if the coral has been out of the water for a year, i wouldnt risk letting bleach into your system. i would rinse it under HOT water and then let it sit in the sun and dry thuroghly. then repeat. then place in tank. enjoy (caution this coral you are about to enjoy is hot)

Using bleach is very common. It is perfectly safe as long as you rinse it well.

VERY, VERY WELL!!
The bleach can take awhile to get out the coral.

Hmm.. people have used bleach for years. It's a very old concept. I can't believe this thread. :|

Bleach is a great way to kill germs. Used it for yrs in my daycare to clean toys, bedding etc. Just make sure you soak all of the bleach out before adding to your tank.

If you don't want to use bleach, how long should you boil it. I have some that used to be in a tank 15 years ago, now it has been on display, and has gotten dusty etc. I would like to use it in my tank(s).
Would this method also allow you to put in shells you have?

I say boil the bejeesus out of dead coral and shells that you have collected from outside before putting them into your tank.
