dead Derasa Clam

ok so a few days ago i noticed my peppermint shrimp nibbling on its mantle.. the clam retracted where he was nipping.. so i noticed that the shrimp didnt want to stop so I placed a container with a bunch of vents in it over the clam so maybe the shrimp would loose interest.. so that worked for a few days.. so i took the container off no problem..
so i go out of town and asked my GF to watch my tank for 2 days.. (she didnt turn the lights on to the tank at all) I dont think that would kill the clam since they use the light to "eat"
do you think that peppermint shrimp would have messed with the clam that much to kill it?
if so, that dude is a goner! 50 vs 2.99 .. no contest..

I have lost two this exact way, so finally gave up trying to keep clams. Both times were just as you described....saw the Peppermint nibbling on the mantle, clam retracts, few days later = Dead Clam and everyone enjoying the buffet. I'm told the Peppermint is only after dead tissue, but in both of my cases, the clam was alive and seemed well when I first noticed the nibbling.

how big was the clam? some shrimps will take advantage of smaller clams. most though will leave it alone unless the clam is already dying.

About the only shrimp that I actually trust are the Lysmata Wurdemanni. Those are peppermint shrimp. There is also another "peppermint shrimp" which is a cousin and usually comes from the caribbean called, same first name, only I think the last name is Rathbunae. They usually have blacker tails and in my experience are sometimes more aggressive.

LOL the clam was that big the pep is about maybe an inch long but he has the black tail fins or whatever..
the clam looked normal to me, open wide no "panting" or anything.
