If it is a saltwater rock i'd clean it and cycle it with a couple pieces of fresh lr to seed it. In a few monthes you want beable to tell the difference.

and just make sure you also have a couple powerheads to circulate it well.
I'm doing the same with 100+ lbs also. Same situation - bought a tank and got the rock for free since it was "dead". Funny how leaving it in the tank for a few months turns it to gold once it is "alive" again.

you have some great pieces of rock there, definately use it as long as the previous owner can tell you no copper was used in the tank.

some nicely shaped pieces there! They'll look real nice..
funny how you have the power strip plugged into the other power strip. I think we've all done that before.
and just wondering - you going to put sand in there or go bare bottom? the intake on the left there is on the bottom of the glass. that'll be good as long as you're going bare bottom

and some other advice - depending on the age of the tank, you might consider resealing it before you go too far - may save you some headache down the line. Leak test it either way before you go too far.

lfs said that the figji rock was bad to throw it out because it had dried out what do you think to keep cycling it or to do what he says

With idk whats on this rock if your really scared about putting in or not you could always bleach it then remove the bleach =o bleach should remove ANYTHING but it can be tricky to much and its hard to get back out of the rock @,@ and taking he bleach out can be done with other products most saltwater fish stores have i think o.o; gl ( i bleached some of mine to remove copper still using the same rock today with inverts/ect make sure to use a bucket you'll never use for anything else =o fill with water then add some bleach DON'T add a lot less is better then more.)

NO way. Dont throw that stuff out!!! Since you are setting up your tank from scratch you can cycle it right in your tank your setting up if you want to. Other option would be to do it in large rubbermaid containers with power heads. Those rocks are just fine. You can eventually get some "live rock" from somewhere to mix into it and the life will spread onto that 100lbs of rock. Live rock is essentially all the bacteria and critters that live within the rock. That will eventually move into any rock within the tank and reproduce and spread and so on and so on! I have about 50 lbs of the same kind of stuff sitting in an empty tank that someone gave me. I will be doing the same thing at some point to. Dont listen to the guy from the pet store. He has NO idea what he's talking about. That rock would still sell as base rock for about $3-$5 a lb. Alot of people will buy that and only a little live rock to save on cost.
