dead sand star

I had it for about 8 mo. and alway done well i looked in my tank today and it was missing a leg and another one comming off don't know why. what would make it die?I also heard that they give off some kind of toxin when they die is that true also had a hammer coral die yesterday. I have a 125 gal.tank my ammonia is 0. nitrite is 0. nitrate is about 20. PH is 8.2 and the temp is 80 all the time thanx for any help you can give me sam

i know what ya mean, i had one die on me that way. this is what i think happened to mine. he likes going through the rock gaps. he injures his leg on the rock and hermits, shrimp, etc are nibbling at it.
try removing him early so he can regenerate the leg.
