dead snails

I had 4or 5 snails in a 5 gal hex tank. I had started to add a little calcium to help purple algee growth, but after a few days all of my snails died. Is this because of the calcium

i did the exact same thing and my snails died
i tested the water for calcium week later and it was fine but it might have spiked the calcium then it went down

it probably isnt a good idea if you add alot of calcium without checking levels before and after you add it. what are your other parameters
