Is it necessary to have a deep sand bed in sump. I only have LR in there right now with some pods and chaeto?

What are the pros and cons?
Do you ever have to clean the DSB or just let it ride?

Thanks in advance.

Is chaeto just free floating? Can you have it in a sump without any other modifications done other than adding a light?

No it's not necessary to run a DSB in the sump. As far as maintenance on a DSB, the answer is yes they still need to be maintained....

i take out the chaetomorpha and syphon out any detris on the top layer of sand with out disturbing the 5" bed of sand. then i trim chaeto and put it back in the refugium until next water change, repeat.
